Our History

The dragon boat club, in Sussex Inlet, was formed in 2010 with the assistance of the Nowra Waterdragons Club. The River Dragons are closely affiliated with the Nowra club, using their expertise and knowledge in helping us to grow in membership and dragon boating skills.

The River Dragons is a social community based club, it is one of three dragon boat clubs in the area, (Nowra, Sussex Inlet and Moruya), that residents and tourists can utilise.

We offer local residents and interested tourists the opportunity to experience the unique thrill of dragon boating by coming out for a short paddle with club members. We “show off” our paddling skills by performing demonstration paddles on the waterways of Sussex Inlet, Ulladulla and Huskisson. We participate in this way at the Lions Country Fair, Rotary Duck Dash, Sussex Inlet “Choppers for Charity”, Ulladulla “Blessing of the Fleet”, Shoalhaven River Festival and the Sussex Inlet RSL Annual Fireworks Display.

Currently we have two dragon boats, a 10 seater “Dragonfly” purchased in  2012 with the assistance of members fund-raising – and a 20 seater “Dragonheart II” purchased in 2016 with the aid of grants and donations from the local community.

We participate in Dobroyd 10s (a regatta for 10 paddlers in 20 seater boat), the Nowra Community Festival and the Shellharbour Dragon Boat Challenge. And a hardy group of members have also raced under the banner of “Southern Warriors”, at the Masters Games and the Pan Pacific Games.

The main purpose of our club is to promote good health, good fellowship and teamwork via the sport of dragon boating and by using our paddling skills to benefit the local community.
