Following two rigorous training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, a brief “window of opportunity” between the Friday night thunderstorm and the heavy rain which set in on Saturday evening saw more than 20 River Dragons and supporters gathered on the northern foreshores of the Shoalhaven for the “Race 4” DBNSW Regatta. The 19 crew members, including drum and sweep, were not so lucky in our two heats in both of which we were cut off by competing clubs and were forced to slow our pace. Full marks to Sandi who slowed our boat to avoid a collision in the second heat. Despite these incidents we all had a lot of fun and fellowship and, after all, the other boat was crewed by our friends from the “Southern Warriors” (a composite crew from Merimbula, Narooma and Moruya). Ironically, a similar near-collision in an earlier heat had caused the capsize of a boat crewed by the elite “Tsunami” Club from Blackwattle Bay, Sydney. Never a dull moment in the dragon boats!
